Point-based immigration is an insult to our values, would separate families for ever, and immediately impact workers and nation’s economy.

Los Angeles, CA — The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the largest immigrant rights organization in California, came out in strong opposition to the Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) Act. Senators Tom Cotton (R-AK) and David Perdue (R-GA) joined President Trump Wednesday at the White House to announce the nativist bill.

The following are comments for Angelica Salas, CHIRLA executive director.

“President Trump has openly paired up with the nativist, white supremacist movement to revive a decades-old, point-based proposal to severely limit legal immigration, keep families from reuniting, and deal a severe blow to American workers and our nation’s economy.

The RAISE Act will never become law because it is anti-American, anti-worker, and anti-immigrant. This proposal is read meat to Donald Trump’s base and does nothing to follow an orderly immigration process which the large majority of Americans support.

Trump’s warped narrative about immigrant contributions throughout the history of our nation could not be more wrong. Americans by far recognize and value that immigrants contribute positively to their communities, grow our economy, and make our nation the most diverse, and culturally-rich nation in the world. The fact that President Trump shares a myopic view of immigration and immigrants should be alarming and underscores the Administration’s blunt effort to pigeon hole immigrants when it is convenient and try to distract Americans from other critical issues.”
