IN CORONAVIRUS CRISIS, GOVERNMENT MUST PROTECT EVERYONE, INCLUDING IMMIGRANTS
As Los Angeles County declares health emergency in response to more than a dozen cases of coronavirus, a coalition of immigrant and health care advocates urges immigrants to seek medical care if they suspect infection.
Los Angeles, CA — A coalition of immigrant rights and health care advocates led by Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), Clínica Monseñor Oscar A. Romero, SEIU-Committee on Interns and Residents, Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County, LA Care, and HealthNet, held a press conference at LAC + USC Medical Center to urge immigrants in our community to remain calm and, above all, to seek medical attention if they suspect they have contracted coronavirus.
“The health of our community comes first, and medical care is a human right,” said Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Executive Director. “Immigration status should not prevent us from protecting our health and that of our families.”
The coalition rejects any politicization of this public health issue. We will address community concerns surrounding public charge and access to safety net services.
