IMPORTANT STATEMENT: FOLLOWING #SUPREMECOURT DECISION TO UPHOLD #DACA, CHIRLA FILES FIRST NEW DACA APPLICATION SINCE 2017

— Only moments after the United States Supreme Court affirmed that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program can move forward uninterrupted, denying the Trump Administration’s capricious and racist move to shatter the lives of over one million undocumented young immigrants and their families, the largest immigrant rights organization in California, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), filed an application for a first-time DACA applicant from California since 2017.

The following comments are for Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Executive Director.

“The Court’s decision to continue the original DACA program from 2012 breathes new life into relief that we have always known to be legal, just, and fair. Operating in the spirit and letter of today’s ruling, CHIRLA has filed a first-time DACA application to ensure the Trump Administration does not ignore the will of the court and the people. Indeed it must extend swift consideration to these immigrant youth who are waiting to be protected immediately.

By submitting this brand new DACA application, we are signaling our bold, full intent to hold this President and the xenophobic ilk that run his government accountable. We believe President Trump will try to come up with new loopholes to stop young people from being protected, but we will be ready with applications and stories of real people whose lives have been derailed by his racist agenda and stopping the program in 2017. Just like we did back in 2012, CHIRLA will be on the vanguard by protecting, fighting for, organizing, and serving immigrant youth and their families.
